Fraudsters exploit Cold Weather Bonus in new text message scam

Tuesday 05 November 2024

Scammers are preying on vulnerable islanders that are eligible for the 'Cold Weather Bonus' in a new text message scam.

The Government yesterday posted on social media to warn islanders about the fraudulent messages, which ask for personal information from those entitled to the winter benefit.

This one-off payment aims to help pensioner households with the cost of heating during the winter months.

The post said: "We are aware some people are receiving a text message about the cold weather bonus and being asked to supply personal information.

"If you receive a message, please do not share anything."

Islanders are also being encouraged to report the scam online.

The Cold Weather Bonus, amended last summer so that recipients receive a fixed sum of £70 a month, aims to help people with heating bills as well as buying warm bedding and clothing.

The £70 payments are made between October and March, adding up to £420 over the course of the winter.
