Disabled Islanders are being encouraged to experience the thrill of being at sea at this weekend’s Barclays Jersey Boat Show.
The founder of Wetwheels, disabled mariner Geoff Holt MBE, will be back in the Island with his fast catamaran which will be taking to the water alongside the recently-commissioned Wetwheels Jersey - giving even more passengers in wheelchairs the chance to talk the helm and try their hand at fishing.
They will also get to explore the seabed with the on-board underwater video camera.
Chairman of Wetwheels Jersey Andy Le Seelleur said: “Larger charities and community organisations will be able to enjoy time on the water together.
“We are honoured that Geoff has agreed to return this year as it will be one of the rare occasions that both Wetwheels boats will operate together and we can give even more people a lot of fun in doing so”.
“Dolphins have been spotted in local waters now and if passengers get to see them up close they won’t forget it for a long time.”
Mr Le Seelleur says Wetwheels is extremely stable and has been designed to safely accommodate wheelchairs.
There are some spaces left for this weekend’s trips and any charity or community group wishing to have a go, should call Andy Le Seelleur on 07797 758338 or email enquiries@wetwheels.je
Organisers are promising plenty to do on and off the water at the Show which kicks off at 10 am on Saturday with the hoisting of the Boat Show flag by its young designer - 11-year old Grouville School pupil, Millie-Mae Foley.
Group Commercial Director for Ports of Jersey Myra Shacklady said: “The event has grown not only in size but popularity in recent years and appeals now not only to our large boating community but both residents and Island visitors alike.
‘We can’t always guarantee the weather but admission to the show is entirely free and we strive to provide everyone who visits with an enjoyable and memorable weekend. This is one of the highlights of the year for us at Ports of Jersey and an opportunity to showcase our much valued marine leisure industry as well as the perfect excuse to blow away those winter blues and kick start summer.”
