More than 70 members and friends of the island’s Nigerian community came together for a special celebration at the weekend.

‘NaijeFest’, an even marking 62 years of independence held at the newly refurbished Howard Davis Hall, was the first of what organiser Oluwasegun Alemeru hopes will be many opportunities for networking and socalising.

"Attendees were treated to variety of Nigerian delicacies, including the famous Nigerian Jollof rice, pounded yam and egunsi, pepper soup and pepper chicken, games, and modern/classic Nigerian sounds. Sounds were provided by DJ Arthur," Mr Alemeru explained.

"As a Commonwealth country, we also spent time networking and deliberating on how we can become better islanders and how to contribute tangibly to our beloved Jersey.

"We hope this would be first amongst many, and in the near future, we would be able to host more persons to come celebrate our independence with us."
