For many it’s a well-paid profession but one GP has decided to set up a new practice where many of his patients won’t be paying a penny.
Dr Fred Rud is offering free appointments for the under-five’s – the first GP in the Island to do so - at his new Atlantic Surgery which opens today at the Lido Medical Centre.
Dr Rud said both Health’s white paper and the Jersey Consumer Council’s report highlighted a need for more transparency and better value for money and that‘s what he aims to provide.
The Danish doctor has been working in the Island for the past three years and has experience working at the General Hospital in paediatrics, gynaecology and the A&E department.
He said: “I came across people who had to use it for medical care because they couldn’t afford to go anywhere else.”
Dr Rud said he thinks the quality of medical care in Jersey is really fantastic and the care he gives his patients has already been recognised - he was shortlisted for the Customer Service Awards last year.
He is one a of growing number of people setting up business on their own – the number of self-employed in the Island has more than doubled in the last decade.
“I’ve been working in Jersey for a couple of years, worked for a couple of different practices but I wanted to do what I wanted to do, not just focus on the turnover, make a healthy business and focus on primary care. It’s my first time running my own business, I’ve had some sleepless nights but it’s been fun.
“I’m trying to do my best medical care and take it to the next step.”
His surgery will be open from 8 am until 6 pm Monday to Friday and for a few hours on Saturday mornings.
