A 64-year-old grandfather is facing jail after being convicted of raping an autistic teenager following a night out.
Joseph Raymond Lloyd attacked the girl in Snow Hill car park after following her through the town centre.
He denied rape and sexual penetration without consent but was unanimously convicted by jurors this afternoon, following three hours' deliberation.
He has now been remanded in custody. A sentencing date is expected to be set tomorrow.
During the Royal Court trial, the jury of seven men and five women were shown CCTV footage of Lloyd leaving the Dog & Sausage pub in Halkett Street on the night in question, just as the victim was passing. He then appeared to follow close behind her.
CCTV later captured the two in Snow Hill, where Lloyd was seen kissing the girl and leading her by the hand behind a van parked in Snow Hill car park.
Once there, he is said to have pulled up her dress, assaulted her and raped her.
Jurors were shown body-worn camera footage from police officers who attended the scene within minutes of the alleged victim’s 999 phone call.
The teenager is seen sobbing as she struggles to explain to an officer what happened.
Lloyd was arrested at the scene. He was charged in November 2022 following an extensive investigation and remained on police bail until his trial.
Detective Constable Carla Garnier said the "vulnerable" victim was "completely traumatised by these events", but showed "an incredible level of courage and strength".
DC Garnier added: "She has been supported by specially trained officers, Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (IDSVAs) and the Intermediary Service throughout the investigation.
