Are you Jersey's Star Christmas Baker?

Sunday 27 November 2016

For those mourning the end of Bake Off and the start of grey weather, a local firm seeks to bring back the sparkle with a pinch of sugar – by launching Jersey’s Great Christmas Bake Off.

PR agency Direct Input is inviting individuals and organisations to submit Christmas-themed bakes in a bid to become Jersey’s Star Baker, whilst also raising money for charity.

Competitors will have a chance to win one of two awards: one awarded by local judges and the people’s favourite, judged through a Facebook ‘like’ vote.

While Mary Berry will not be present, winning the first award still won’t be a ‘piece of cake’, with bakers assessed in the style of technical challenges: based on technicality, bake quality and design detail - 'soggy bottoms' beware. There’s dough up for grabs too – each Star Baker will win a £50 Le Lievres voucher.

After the competition, the cakes will be sliced up and sold outside Marks and Spencer in town to raise money for the Jersey Christmas Appeal – a charity providing food, heating and toy vouchers to 1,500 needy Jersey families at Christmas each year.

Head Judge, Antoinette De Louche, Head of Food and Nutrition at Jersey College for Girls, commented: “I have always wanted to be like Mary Berry so judging this competition seemed like the perfect opportunity. I will be looking for a cake that is baked to perfection and encompasses the spirit of Christmas.”

Peter Brewer, Executive Chef at Radisson Blu, said that he looked forward to discovering Jersey's “hidden local baking talent.”

“There is nothing quite like a Christmas cake so I can’t wait to see what the bakers have to offer,” he added.

Cakes need to be dropped off before 11am at Direct Input, 5 Bond Street on Thursday 15 December. The cakes will be photographed and go live on social media that lunchtime.
