Guernsey’s Deputy CM resigns amid spat with leading committee

Wednesday 26 October 2022

Guernsey’s Deputy Chief Minister has resigned from the island’s leading committee, criticising the other members on the way out.

Deputy Heidi Soulsby confirmed that she was leaving the Policy and Resources Committee, which is led by Guernsey’s Chief Minister Deputy Peter Ferbrache, in a statement yesterday afternoon.

It has been obvious for quite a while that my views and advice have not been valued by some on the Committee and I think there is little point in me continuing in the hope that things may get better,” she said.

I thank you personally for inviting me on to the Committee after the last election.

“However, two years on, I now believe I will be able to make more of a positive contribution to the future of Guernsey outside of the Committee.”

It is the first resignation from Guernsey’s senior committee since it was formed in 2016.

Responding to her decision, Deputy Ferbrache said: “I’m sorry to receive Deputy Soulsby’s letter of resignation but I respect her decision. I want to express my thanks to her as I believe she has made a valuable contribution to this Committee in the last two years."

The remaining members of P&R have declined to comment until further notice.

Deputy Soulsby, who as written to the island’s Bailiff, Richard McMahon, to confirm her decision, will continue in the role until a successor has been appointed.
