GUIDE: Africa Awareness Week 2024

Thursday 23 May 2024

Islanders are invited to learn more about Jersey's African-Caribbean culture in a series of events organised as part of Jersey's eighth annual celebration of Africa Awareness Week.

Local charity Friends of Africa Jersey is once again bringing a host of educational and entertaining events, with the support of the Government, in the run up to Africa Day on Saturday 25 May.

Africa Awareness Week aims to promote diversity and inclusion through a number of educational and cultural activities, offered to islanders for free.

It is a chance for Jersey’s African-Caribbean community to join together and share their culture with the island.

Live performances, painting workshops and an evening mixer are all on the agenda.

Express has compiled a list of what to expect...

African Painting Workshops

Join artist Selina Chibanda – who produces her work under the name Eye am Africa –  in a three-hour African Painting Workshop.

The event will take place from 12:30-15:30 each day this week until Friday.

You will learn about some traditional African art styles while you paint your own inspired piece to take home.

Tickets are free to purchase and can be reserved here.

Lunchtime performances

You can visit the Royal Square between 11:00 and 15:00 on Thursday and Friday for live cultural performances.

The line-up features Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Vusa Mkhahya and his band.

There will also be authentic Jamaican and Kenyan food for sale.

Evening mixer

You can join members of Friends of Africa Jersey at ROJO nightclub at 22:00 this Friday night for an end-of-week party.

African Day Gala Dinner

The Friends of Africa Jersey community is inviting islanders to join them in an evening of celebrations with food, drink and a live DJ.
