Halkett Place closed for third Hoedown

Sunday 27 August 2017

Halkett Place will be transformed into a scene from the Wild West today (Sunday) as the Halkett Hoedown returns for its third edition with live music, western themed games and line dancing.

Thousands of people of all ages are expected for this third Hoedown which will be hosted by music presenter ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris.

Synonymous with Country and Americana music, Bob Harris OBE is hailed the world over as an ambassador for the genre. He has been awarded countless accolades for his tireless work promoting the artists he loves and believes in, which recently included Jersey’s very own Frankie Davies. Taking advantage of his trip to the island, Bob Harris will be bringing the Under The Apple Tree studio to record performances by local artists which he will then publish through Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company.

Live music will be performed by local and UK acts all day and into the night with Country, Americana, Folk & Blues being the main themes.  Joe Young & The Bandits, who were a hit with the audience in 2015, will be returning to the main stage, which will once once again be set in a huge trailer jack-knifed across Halkett Place. New this year will be a second stage run by Chordz Music School with some of their best students. Other performers during the day include the Robert J Hunter band, Emily Faye, Badlabecques, Word on the Street and the Gonzo Gypsy Goodtime Band.

Halkett Place will be transformed with straw bales and Western themed decorations, complete with jails, stores, stocks, bars and signs which set the scene perfectly. Wild West Fancy dress is highly recommended by the organisers and should help to get you in the mood or win prizes for the best outfits. Western activities will be plenty with Line Dancing, face-painting or caricatures to name only a few.  The children and family area has also be expanded with even more activities and games that proved so popular in 2015.

The 50/50 raffle, where proceeds collected are paid out half to the winners, half to charity, will also make its return. The winner of the 2015 edition took home £4,375 and organisers are rooting for an even bigger prize this Sunday.

But the Hoedown is not just about having wild wild fun. Set up by David Stokes, owner of Bean Around the World, Niall MacFirbhisigh of Stoked Music and Louise Stirling fundraising and events coordinator, the street party is also a charitable event which will support five local charities - Brig Y Don Children's Charity, The British Heart Foundation Jersey, Headway Jersey, Mencap Jersey & The Jersey Alzheimers Association - this year. The previous editions were a 'huge' success with over £40,000 donated to Headway Jersey.

Donations buckets will be available upon entry for anyone wishing to support the charities. Dunnells will also be operating a bar on Halkett Place with all profits going to the supported charities.
