Here's a happy yarn amid the doom and gloom...dozens have responded to a call for miniature woollen nests, knitting enough for more than 100 spring chicks.
After appealing for islanders' help via Facebook three weeks ago, the JSPCA says it has been "overwhelmed" with donations.
While 130 nests came from locals, some nests were sent all the way from Scotland.
Staff at the Animals' Shelter explained that getting the mini homes ready ahead of spring was important, as they are "vital" for orphaned bird babies without a mother to look after them.

Fundraising Manager Michelle Parker said: “We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the Jersey community who have been frantically knitting away to create nests for our springtime babies - we’ve even had some from Wales!
“These woollen nests are perfect for orphaned baby birds and animals who need to be kept warm, and we now have plenty to see us through this next baby season.
“We are so grateful for the support of the general public who are helping us to make a difference to the lives of animals in Jersey.”
The Shelter don't want knitters to put their needles away just yet either.
They're now on the hunt for people to knit them some Easter chicks.
"Thank you to all those busy making nests for our real life springtime babies, but now we are also asking for knitters to make some Easter chicks, please," the team explained on Facebook.
"We are hoping to have donated lots of creme eggs to put inside, but we need lots of chickens made (there's even a pattern for an Easter bunny that can have an egg inside).
"We will then have these gorgeous little gifts for sale at our Reception to raise funds for the charity."
