Heroics by Jersey cricketers - but not enough

Saturday 05 November 2016

Jersey enjoyed one of their finest cricketing days as the Island registered a nail biting win over the USA, but it was not enough to save them from relegation from World League Cricket Division Four.

Jersey will instead drop back down to Division Five, but the scale of their achievement in beating USA is immense.

Peter Gough's side beat the USA by a single run and with Italy also getting the better of Bermuda it was only down to run rate that sealed Jersey's fate, as Bermuda stayed up.

A measure of Jersey's efforts can be seen in the league table as Gough's team were relegated having won two of their five matches, but the USA were promoted are winning three of theirs. It shows just how close Jersey came and underlines their heroics.

Jersey won their final group game as they managed 249 all out off 48.2 overs. Fine half centuries from Nat Watkins and Jonty Jenner gave Jersey hope, but it looked to low a score to trouble the Americans. Notwithstanding Alex Amsterdam's century, the USA run chase came up short by a single run as Charles Perchard and Watkins grabbed three wickets a piece.

Although Italy registered their first win of the tournament by beating Bermuda by 25 runs it wasn't enough for the Jersey team, as they were relegated, with Bermuda just staying up.
