Jersey to host big Inter-Island hockey tournament

Sunday 13 September 2015

It’s hockey’s time to shine next weekend when it’s Jersey’s turn to host the sport’s big Inter-Island tournament.

The sport wasn’t part of this summer’s NatWest Island Games but there will be plenty of hockey in action at Les Quennevais Sports Centre next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Men’s and ladies’ teams from Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Orkney will be all be in action competing against the home side in the biennial PwC Islands Hockey Tournament.

Over 120 players from the four Islands will be competing in fixtures with both Guernsey’s men and the Isle of Man’s ladies looking to retain the titles they won in the Isle of Man two years ago. Jersey’s teams are hoping they regain the trophies they won the last time the tournament was played on home soil.

JHA President Ed Daubeny said: “Following on from the fantastic Island Games, this is hockey’s ‘chance to shine’ in Jersey and for the sport to show all that it has to offer.  Jersey Hockey is looking forward to hosting both the players and supporters from the other Islands and winning September’s PwC Islands Tournament at home would be the highlight of the season for our Jersey teams.”

Director at PwC Channel Islands Adrian Peacegood who is Captain of Guernsey  Mens 1st XI squad said: “PwC is a long-term supporter of island hockey, having already established a successful programme in partnership with Guernsey Hockey LBG Juniors over the years. Our local Channel Island firm has also recently enjoyed hosting PwC teams from Reading, London, Leeds and Scotland at the annual PwC Mixed Hockey tour and the sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie generated was uplifting.

“This time around, we’re looking forward to supporting the top talent from across all four competing islands. It’s bound to be a very exciting weekend for the sport and the friendly rivalry between the various islands will definitely up the tempo of all the games. It’s also great to see a number of our own PwC people lined up to represent their islands on the hockey pitch, which will further enhance the competitive spirit this tournament genuinely thrives on. “

The finals will be played on Sunday afternoon.
