A new business has set up in town and will be horsing around all summer.
Jimmy – a seven-year-old Irish gypsy cob – will be plodding round St Helier six days a week and giving his passengers a chance to experience life in the slow lane.
He’s quickly become the “mane” attraction in Parade Gardens where he starts his “Jersey Horse” carriage tours and is proving very popular with his new “neigh”bours!
His owners Phil and Jenny Renouf say everyone wants to stop and give Jimmy a stroke and he is loving all the extra attention.
Jenny, who is an experienced horse driver, will be taking the reins on all the half hour tours and leading passengers past the cows at West Centre, the Market, the States Building, Town Church, Liberation Square, and Town Hall.
Phil said: “Jersey has never maintained its traditions of horse use. We’ve seen this done so successfully in towns around the world. This is still a tourist Island and we hope to attract both locals and tourists.
“We’ve had some amazing feedback already. We were concerned about how we’d effect traffic in town because we do go slowly but drivers have been so supportive.”
The carriage can take up to five passengers on each tour that lasts between 20 and 25 minutes. Jimmy starts work at 10 am and will be setting off every half an hour “on the trot” until his last tour at 3.30 pm.
