"Peeling like a sardine can": Repairs underway to storm-damaged roof

Wednesday 11 December 2024

Residents of a Waterfront apartment block are being reassured that repairs to the building’s roof are underway after storm-force winds caused visible damage over the weekend.

The Jersey Development Company has moved to reassure islanders about the condition of the Horizon development's roof after concerns were raised on social media over the weekend.

One islander shared an image depicting the roof of the East block "peeling like a sardine can", as Storm Darragh swept across the island and brought wind gusts up to 76 miles per hour.

The post led to criticism of the building's construction, with one comment saying the structure was "coming down just as quick as went up".

The JDC, which oversees the Horizon project, responded by clarifying that the storm dislodged parts of the roof's eco-friendly system but left the waterproof membrane intact.

In a statement, the developer explained: "The Horizon development has a bio-diverse roof system that is seeded with wildflowers.

"There is a filter fleece (a protection layer) that sits between the roof waterproof membrane and the growing medium.

"With the force of the wind, the growing medium on the roof was dislodged and the filter fleece then didn't have anything weighing it down and it became dislodged.

"This did not impact the integrity of the waterproofing of the roof and the bio-diverse roof medium is in the process of being reinstated by the Horizon building management company."

Storm Darragh prompted an red wind warning and caused disruption across the island, with Infrastructure teams working through Sunday night to clear 18 fallen trees and debris from main roads.

Damage was also reported at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, and Jersey Electricity confirmed power outages in several areas.

Almost all flights on Saturday and Sunday were cancelled or rescheduled due to strong winds.
