Hospice overcomes hurdles to open shop at Holme Grown

Saturday 09 November 2024

Jersey Hospice will now be able to open a charity shop in a quarter of Holme Grown farm shop in Grouville after politicians agreed to vary planning conditions at the site.

On Thursday, the Planning Committee – a group of States Members who determine larger and more controversial planning applications – approved a request from the business at Fauvic Nurseries to amend restrictions imposed in an approved 2009 application, which gave owner Stanley Payn permission to change his farm shop to include a restaurant.

In May this year, the committee had already approved the application – going against the recommendation of the Planning Department – but it was later found that the conditions set then were not appropriate.

But only two of the three amended conditions were approved by the committee this week.

One of the successful conditions allows up to 25% of the existing floorspace to be used exclusively by Jersey Hospice for a shop.

The other allowed the charity to make money from their operation at Holme Grown, as previously commercial activity was restricted to the Payn family.

A third condition, however, was rejected by the politicians. This would have allowed the farm shop and café to be sold or leased separately from the remainder of the farm.

There were three public comments objecting to the variation of conditions, and 13 in favour.

In March 2023, The Planning Committee rejected an application to build a 50-bed nursing home and Jersey Hospice shop at Holme Grown.
