Hydrochloric acid spill in kids' park

Fire fighters were called to a children’s play park this morning following a leakage of hydrochloric acid.

States parks and gardens staff arrived at work today at Coronation Park, Milbrook, to discover a chemical spillage on the floor of a plant room, servicing a children's paddling pool.

Five firefighters wearing chemical protection suits arrived at 6.30am and identified the chemical as five litres of hydrochloric acid.

Working with parks staff, they were able to isolate elements of the plant room until a single 25-litre container of hydrochloric acid was identified as the sole culprit of the spillage.

The spilled acid was absorbed by specialist absorbents and ‘sealed’ in chemical containers.

The park remained closed during the incident and parks staff monitored any potential for the chemicals to either make their way into the park grounds, or to the pool itself. Environmental health officers were called and the area is now safe.
