As athletes prepare for the final day of competition in the NatWest Island Games in Gotland Jersey currently lies in fourth place in the medals table.
The Island has 62 medals in total: 20 gold, 17 silver and 25 bronze.
The ‘old enemy’ Guernsey is in third with 76 medals of which 26 are gold. The Faroe Islands are in top spot, and the Isle of Man is in the number two slot.
Probably the most outstanding Jersey athlete on day six of the games was shooter Sarah Campion. She won gold in the 50m smallbore rifle event bringing her tally of gold at this year’s games to four. For the second time this week, team mate Susan De Gruchy once again had to settle for silver.
Today sees Jersey’s women’s football team – the defending champions – battle it out with the Isle of Wight for the bronze. They missed out on a place in the final losing 2-1 to the hosts yesterday.
There are Jersey-Guernsey tussles in both the men’s tennis and badminton singles finals. In the tennis Stuart Parker faces Pat Ogier, and in the badminton it’s defending champion Mark Constable and Jordan Trebert.
But perhaps the biggest news of the day could come in the gymnastics. ‘Special’ gymnast Alex Buesnel has already picked up a silver in the team event, but later today could pick up an individual medal in the floor. If he does it’s believed he’ll be the first person with a learning difficulty to win an individual medal.
The closing ceremony takes place at 20:00 Swedish time.
