Mum aims to rekindle Halloween 'spirit' with trick-or-treating map

A mum-of-three is hoping to rekindle the ‘spirit’ of Halloween with an interactive map of trick-or-treating spots in the Channel Islands.

Michelle Pearce-Burke, who lives in Guernsey, said she launched the digital map because “no one else was doing it”.

Islanders can place a virtual pumpkin on their property or business to signify that they welcome trick-or-treaters.

The website also allows them to state what time they will be available on the night – and people can use the map to plan their route on Halloween night.

More than 100 Jersey properties have already been listed on the website, with that figure growing daily, especially as Halloween nears.

Businesses and charities have also backed the site.

Speaking to Express, Michelle said: "I set it up a couple of weeks ago because I've got three young girls who are becoming increasingly interested in Halloween and trick or treating.

"I was thinking that it's quite difficult around where I live to know exactly who's open for Halloween.

"This was really about making it simpler for people and banish that awkward door-knocking."

Michelle's map had an incredible reaction – and within a few days her social media page publicising the website and digital map had gathered hundreds of followers.

At the time of writing, the map's Facebook page has over 500 followers.

At first, she was unsure whether the map would just be for her and some friends and family, but the more she shared it, the more it caught on, and she thought: "Why not open it to everyone!"

The mum-of-three, who has a professional background in technology, is covering the costs of the map, site and domain herself.

"There's no intention to monetise it anytime soon," she said.

"We just thought we'd see how it goes, build something nice and give back to the community."

Islanders can learn more about the map from the Facebook page or by visiting the website.
