Islanders fund over 1,000 meals for frontline heroes

Saturday 04 April 2020

A campaign to provide home-delivered food to local healthcare heroes in their hour of need has received donations totalling over £12,000 - enough to provide over 1,000 meals.

#FeedOurFrontline was launched on Monday by the Chairman of a global foundation living in Jersey who wishes to remain anonymous.

The aim of the campaign is to provide healthcare professionals with either a home-delivered meal for themselves or their family, in the hope of alleviating “some of the stress and huge amount of pressure” they are currently under as the result of the current health emergency.

Islanders as well as companies were urged to donate on the FeedOurFrontline website with £10 providing a home-delivered meal for a healthcare worker and £20 providing a meal for a healthcare worker and their family, through vouchers on the online store Fetch.je.

Over £4,000 was raised in the first 24 hours after the launch, totalling more than £12,500 at the time of writing.

In a post shared on social media yesterday, the team said islanders raised enough money to provide over 1,000 meals to the community in just 72 hours.

£2,500 of the money raised went to Caring Cooks, which recently extended its weekly meal service from one day to six days a week to feed islanders who are sick, isolated, in financial crisis or facing other challenges.

“Let’s dig deep everyone,” the team said, adding that there are currently nearly 100 medical staff self-isolating in local hotels so that they don’t risk carrying the virus between work and home - often arriving back at the hotel when the kitchens are closed.
