Jersey Alzheimer's Association issues island-wide competition

Saturday 18 July 2020

In celebration of ten years of giving advice, information and support to islanders affected by dementia, the Jersey Alzheimer’s Association is issuing a ‘Rally Round for Dementia’ challenge to Jersey.

The event, which is running from now until 1st September, invites Jersey residents to complete a collection of questions and tasks. It is open to everyone – people can sign up either as a group of four adults, or with an unlimited number of participants if you are a family group.

The rally involves 70 questions across three categories – ‘Rally round St Helier’, ‘Rally round the other 11 Parishes’, and ‘Indoors/rainy day challenges’.

It will cost £20 to purchase a question sheet, which will be sent to them by email or post, each with a unique number. All proceeds will go to the charity, with the JAA giving, “...thanks to Crestbridge and Ports of Jersey who have donated the first and second prize.”

The prizes in question are as follows.

First prize: a family membership for Durrell.

Second prize – a guided tour of four people in the air traffic control tower.

Wendy Buckley, the JAA’s Community Education Co-ordinator, explained that, “...the charity was planning to organise a scavenger hunt but it had to be cancelled so instead they came up with the idea of a cross between a scavenger hunt a quiz.”

She said that “some of the questions are a bit cryptic”, warning “people will have to analyse the questions.”

The rally features a mix of questions both for the indoors and outdoors tasks, with Wendy saying: “there are some questions that can be answered at home but others, people will have to go and work out the question, then go the place and count something or take a photo to show they have been there.”

“It’s good fun for anybody who likes a challenge and finding out a little bit more about the island.”

Answer sheets will be available on request by emailing info@jerseyalzheimers.com after 12th September.
