Jersey Care Commission appoints new Chair

Thursday 09 January 2025

A former medical director and hospital inspector has been announced as the new Chair of the independent body regulating health and social care in Jersey.

Dr Nigel Acheson has previously held top-level roles such as regional medical director and higher-level responsible officer for the South Region of NHS England.

He also held the role of deputy chief inspector of hospitals at the Care Quality Commission, England's independent regulator of health and social care.

The Jersey Care Commission regulates and inspects all care services for both adults and children on the island – including public, private and voluntary services.

Established under Jersey’s Regulation of Care Law 2014, the JCC is intended to promote best practice and improve health and social care.

Dr Acheson was appointed by Environment Minister Steve Luce, and succeeds Glenn Houston, who served for nearly eight years as the first Chair of the Commission.

In his regulatory roles, Dr Acheson has worked closely with clinical and leadership teams to support the delivery of continuous improvements in a wide variety of healthcare settings.

He enters his new role at a pivotal time for the JCC, which aims to complete its expansion remit this year to include services such as the hospital, ambulance, and mental health services on the island.

JCC CEO Becky Sherrington said: “I would like to thank Glenn Houston for his leadership during the establishment of the Commission and for overseeing the expansion of services we regulate to date.

"2025 will be another significant year for the Commission, with plans to regulate government mental health services, ambulance services, and hospitals.

"We are looking forward to collaborating closely with Dr Acheson and benefiting from his expertise on our board.

"We all share the same goal: ensuring that Islanders receive the best possible care outcomes.”

Dr Acheson added: “It has been a pleasure to work with Becky and the wider team at the Commission so far.

I am focused on working closely with the service providers to support their hard work in delivering care that meets the standards that have been set.

It is an exciting time for care regulation, and I look forward to working closely with the team over the coming year."
