A local artist has captured the "personality and diversity" of Jersey's markets by bringing local produce and characters to life in a new collection of Jersey stamps.
Illustrator Lauren Radley created the stamps — which are due to be released on Tuesday 21 March —based on the theme of Jersey's Traditional Markets.
The stamps will feature a variety of local stalls found in the Central and Beresford Street Market, better known as the Fish Market, in St Helier.
Jersey’s Central Market is a remarkable example of how the island is still connected to its Victorian past, as the Central Market's history can be traced back to 1881 when it was built as part of the Battle of Jersey centenary celebration.
The artistic stalls on the six stamp set include: a fishmonger, a florist, a fruit and vegetable stall, a bakery, a delicatessen, and a butcher.

Lauren Radley explained that she designed the stamps to capture the lively atmosphere within the bustling markets in Jersey that have been home to the island vendors since the 1800s.
“I loved the ‘research’ part of this project: spending time in the markets, chatting to the different stall holders, and taking photographs of them and their produce,” she said.

Lauren graduated from Kingston University in 2009 with a BA in Illustration and Animation, and has gone on to pursue a ten-year career as a freelance illustrator and runs her own business creating "fun and whimsical prints and stationery".
She added: “I really wanted to capture the personality and diversity, not only of the produce on sale, but of the characters working and shopping there too."
In addition to the stamps for each individual stall, Lauren has also designed a miniature sheet consisting of the "iconic cherub-clad fountain" from the Central Market.

The stamps are available to buy from the 21 March 2023 at all Jersey Post branches.
Additional stamp products — including miniature sheets, first day covers, and presentation packs — will be accessible from the Jersey Post Offices at Broad Street, St Helier, Rue de Pres, and St Saviour.
