Jersey netballer’s squad crowned Team of the Year

Monday 17 December 2018

A Jersey netballer is celebrating being crowned a member of the Team of the Year, and taking part in the Greatest Sporting Moment of 2018, at last night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Former Le Rocquier student Serena Guthrie – one of the England’s gold medal-winning team members – celebrated the triumph last night.

Millions of viewers across the UK tuned in to watch the glittering presentation in Birmingham.

The Roses, as Guthrie’s team is known, were crowned as the nation’s top team for 2018 thanks to their win at the Commonwealth Games.

Player Helen Housby’s final second scoring in the final against Australia, which gave the English squad a 52-51 victory, was named the Greatest Sporting Moment of 2018.

It looked as if the game was going to go into extra time when England scored the winning point with just seconds to go.

Following the team's victory, sports star Guthrie made an emotional post on her Instagram profile (@serenabob), describing it as the "best day of my sporting career."

The award was voted on by members of the public, who chose the moment over the England football team’s Wold Cup penalty shootout, as well as three other big sporting moments.

Guthrie celebrated last night's victory on social media, commenting: “2018, it’s been a pleasure. BBC Sport, thanks for thinking were worthy of Team of the Year. To all who voted for us... Wow... Just amazing.. thank you.”
