Financial pressures force Jersey Recovery College to close

Monday 19 August 2024

A local mental health charity has been forced to close "with immediate effect" due to an increased demand on services, growing costs, and a reduction in income and donations.

Jersey Recovery College has supported almost 3,000 islanders with recovery-focussed mental health education since its inception in 2017.

The charity's immediate and permanent closure was announced in a statement issued by its Board of Directors this afternoon.

The statement said: "The charity sector has been hit especially hard by increased demands on service, growing costs, and reduction in income and donations.

"JRC has worked tirelessly to enhance our revenue streams and has explored a number of alternative models in our attempts to ensure continuity.

"Despite our best efforts, the situation has reached a point where it is unsustainable, and all potential options have now been exhausted."

It continued: "JRC’s mission was to champion mental health through education, and we are proud to have done so.

"Since our inception in 2017, we have supported approximately 3,000 islanders with recovery- focussed education."

Last year, the charity ran 58 community courses including managing anxiety, psychosis, sleep difficulties, surfing, mindfulness and arts courses.

JRC also supported 498 people on its Mental Health at Work Programme featuring mental health for managers, supporting colleagues, and first aid for mental health.

The statement concluded: "We are thankful to our many supporters through the years and our wonderful team of staff and volunteers."
