Jersey Library are currently displaying photographs produced by students from Jersey Recovery College as part of a "Reconnecting with Nature through Photography" course with the Société Jersiaise.

Jersey Recovery College students attended the course in 2017 to create self-expression through focusing on re-establishing our connection with nature.

Students were taught how to make landscape photography and how to construct imaginary landscapes with photo materials in order to tell a story, express an idea or convey a feeling. This process of making art is aimed to encourage the expression of inner thoughts or feelings where verbalisation is difficult or not possible.

Connecting with nature is an important part of the protection of the environment as well as Mental Health. Each student’s work relayed how they felt or how they interpreted their surroundings.

The students on the course found the course not only educational but also beneficial to their journey of recovery. One student said of their photograph, entitled ‘You do not have to see the whole staircase...just take the first step’: “This photo, to me, represents my journey of Recovery and how important it is to find the strength to take that 'first step' as every Recovery journey must begin with a single step”.

Other students found that the course enabled them to see that nature can be representative of feelings, saying of their photograph ‘In Love with Nature’ (lead picture), “I captured this image as I believe it shows that signs of 'love' are all around us, especially in nature.”

The exhibition coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week and continues until the end of May.
