Jersey's politicians are joining the French Consul this morning and holding a minute's silence at Highland's College to remember those murdered in yesterday's terror attack on a French magazine in Paris.
Journalists and police officers were among the twelve people massacred at Charlie Hebdo, a weekly publication which has been targeted before by extremists for satirising Islam, and publishing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, and leaders of the militant group Islamic State. This morning it appears there has been another shooting in Paris, killing a police woman.
Last night the Island's Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst tweeted that the Island would, "...stand with France in the coming days, remembering our important and hard fought freedoms." He also quoted the hashtag #Je suis Charlie, which is being used to show support for the victims.
The minute's silence today will be held in Highland's Le Capelin Suite on the second floor of the University Building behind the Great Hall.
Hundreds of thousands of people across France have been gathering since yesterday's massacre in solidarity against the gunmen. In Jersey, former States Deputy Sean Power is organising an impromptu vigil tonight in the Royal Square at 6 pm.
Mr Power said: "People can come down with an A4 sheet with the logo "Je suis Charlie", a candle and a pencil or pen to show the importance of the journalistic profession and acknowledge our relationship with France."
"All the shows of support have been impromptu by members of the public and that's the way it should be. I don't think there has to be an official thing."
A book of condolence is being set up and there are plans for a memorial church service tomorrow lunchtime.
The French Prime Minister has confirmed that Police have made several arrests since the shootings, France's worst terror attack since 1961.
Thousands of officers are now scouring the streets of France on the hunt for two prime suspects - brothers Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi.
