Jersey Water is seeking to upgrade a former data centre in Rue des Prés into a modern new base complete with labs, offices and solar panels after selling off its former headquarters for £3.2m for the previous hospital project.
The utility, which currently has its headquarters in New Street, has applied for planning permission to redevelop premises in Rue Sinnatt at the back of Rue des Prés Trading Estate.
The warehouse-type building is not far from Jersey Post’s headquarters and used to be a data disaster recovery centre owned by Itex and then C5 Alliance.
Jersey Water purchased the vacant building at the end of last year in order to bring elements of its industrial and commercial divisions under one roof.
The utility used to be based at Mulcaster House off Westmount Road but sold it to the Government for £3.2m in 2021 because the site formed part of the now defunct Our Hospital project.

In a statement submitted as part of the planning application, the company says: “The application seeks to fully refurbish and environmentally improve the existing building for sole occupation by Jersey Water.”
Proposed changes include creating a commercial stores area, plant testing workshop and water testing laboratory on the ground floor; and a store on a first-floor mezzanine.
Helier Smith, Chief Executive of Jersey Water, said: “This is a significant milestone for our 140-year-old company; this investment supports the long-term future of the Island’s essential water supply and the important role that we play in serving our community.
“With our customers very much in mind, our new property will bring our people and services together under one roof, so we become more operationally efficient and deliver improved service for generations to come.
“At the same time, we have taken every opportunity to make this development as environmentally sustainable and energy efficient as possible.”
