"It is time to get Jersey back on track"

Tuesday 05 July 2022

Kristina Moore announced that "it is time to get Jersey back on track" as she was elected the island's first female Chief Minister this morning.

Deputy Moore succeeded with 39 votes in her favour, while her opponent, Reform Jersey leader Deputy Sam Mézec secured 10 votes. There were no abstentions.

As her victory was announced, Deputy Moore commented: "May I thank everybody for their support and their encouragement.

"I also thank Deputy Mézec for expressing his views and putting forward a strong argument to the Assembly and I look forward to working with Reform and each and every other member of the Assembly on uniting the community."

She added: "It’s time to get Jersey back on track, Sir."

She secured the leading political role this morning after an hour-long grilling by States Members during which she outlined her 100-day plan and revealed three of her preferred Ministerial candidates:

  • Treasury Minister – Deputy Ian Gorst, former External Relations Minister and Chief Minister;
  • Economic Development Minister – Deputy Kirsten Morel, former Scrutineer and Assistant Economic Development Minister; and
  • Minister for Environment and Energy – new St. Brelade Deputy Jonathan Renouf.

Deputy Moore said she will be putting forward her full preferred slate for the Council of Ministers later today.

However, elections for Ministers won’t be taking place until next Monday and Tuesday.

At this point, the Chief Minister officially takes up the position and chooses one minister to be Deputy Chief Minister.

From Tuesday 19 to Thursday 21 July, the States Assembly will then put forward members for Scrutiny Panels and Committees.

Following this morning's vote, Deputy Sam Mézec congratulated Deputy Moore and wished her "all the very best", saying it was "in the island's interest".

He added that he hoped to be able to provide "constructive input" into her future Government.

Outgoing Chief Minister Senator John Le Fondré also extended his "warmest congratulations" on Twitter.

Deputy Moore's choice for Environment Minister, newcomer Deputy Jonathan Renouf, described the day as "exciting", adding: "A new era begins, with great hope and expectation."

Better Way movement colleague Lucy Stephenson said that Deputy Moore was a "leader to inspire and deliver the reset our community needs and what Islanders voted for."

Deputy Rob Ward of Reform Jersey, who was among Deputy Mézec's Reform Jersey backers, also extended his congratulations, adding that Deputy Moore had "committed to working in a positive manner with all members across the Assembly, which is an approach that will be welcomed by our elected States Members."

Caritas Jersey, which campaigns for the Living Wage, wished Deputy Moore and her future Ministerial colleagues "every success over the next four years in achieving a more fair, equal and inclusive island society."

Campaign group Women in Politics wrote on Twitter: "Voted in based on experience and ability - this really is... an historic moment to be celebrated!"

Pressure group End Cannabis Prohibition Jersey said: "We look forward to engaging with your Government to address issues relating to the Ministries of Health, Education, Children, Economic Development, Environment, Planning, Home Affairs and External Relations."

The Chamber of Commerce said: "On behalf of the local business community, we look forward to continuing our engagement with the Chief Minister's office & new Council of Ministers once elected."

Congratulations also came from across the water - former senior Guernsey politician Deputy Mary Lowe said: "Having worked with Kristina for many years on joint initiatives across Guernsey & Jersey I have no doubt Jersey will be in good hands."

First elected as Deputy for St. Peter in 2011, Kristina Moore served as Home Affairs Minister from 2014 to 2018.

In May 2018, she was elected as a Senator and became Chief Scrutineer, as well as Chairing the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel.
