The Environment department want Islanders to join millions around the world for the global switch off tomorrow night.
They say they are doing their bit for Earth Hour as part of their commitment to reducing consumption across the public sector. The lights at Mont Orgueil, Elizabeth Castle, the Promenade on Victoria Avenue and on Fort Regent’s dome will all go out between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
Standard Bank's lights are going out in their La Motte Street office and the States want other businesses to join in too.
Head of Marketing and Communications Claire Reid said: “This is the second year we have participated in this global initiative, and we think it’s vital that we highlight the issues and aims of the campaign. As a worldwide organisation we fully understand how even the smallest gesture can have international implications with each individual effort combining to be a powerful force for change. We are encouraging our staff to take part in Earth Hour at home, as well as switching off lights in our offices.”
The 3rd Jersey (St Saviour) Scout Group are joining in too and as part of their conservation badge they’ve come up with 60 ideas of how you can pass away the hour – from playing glow stick football to taking a selfie in the dark.
The World Wide Fund for Nature held the first switch off in Sydney in 2007 and now more than 7000 cities and towns around the world take part in the charity’s campaign.
