JSPCA issues warning after microchipping scam in Guernsey

Thursday 23 January 2025

The JSPCA has issued a warning to local pet owners following microchipping scam circulating in Guernsey.

Pet owners in Guernsey were being asked to verify their details by a fake pet microchipping company.

The JSPCA has reassured islanders that they are not aware of any similar scams in Jersey – but reminded pet owners to keep their information up to date.

Interim CEO Tom Noel said: “We reiterate the advice from the GSPCA and the importance of only using legitimate microchipping companies, and ensuring your personal information is secure."

He added that it was a "timely reminder" to pet owners to microchip their pets and keep records up to date.

"Islanders are welcome to come into the shelter to have their pet microchipped or scanned to check their personal information is up to date," said Mr Noel.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said: “It is horrendous to hear of scams like this microchip false company trying to extort money and details out of pet owners.

“Microchipping is an incredible way to identify pets and reunite them when lost with pet owners and there are many fantastic microchip companies that support pet owners but it is extremely important you only communicate with the company you are registered with.”
