The JSPCA is working to re-open its pet crematorium “as soon as possible” after repairs led to its temporary closure.

Islanders recently took to social media to inform others that the JSPCA’s crematorium – one of the only pet cremation services in Jersey – had been closed due to mechanical issues.

One bereaved pet owner posted on the 'Jersey's Cat Community' Facebook page that they had been told to wait a further two weeks before taking home the ashes.

The lack of information and apology, they said, had left them "feeling disgusted".

However, a spokesperson from the island's animal shelter said the closures had been unavoidable and several sudden staff departures had meant that circulation of notices about the issue had not happened.

They said: "[The crematorium] has been down for a few days and we are looking at doing some repairs up there.

"We are planning to get it open as soon as possible."
