Garlic tablets and a weekly tipple...the secret of a long life!

Islanders have been asked to send their best wishes to “an amazing lady” who will be celebrating her 108th birthday on Friday.

Alice (Midge) de la Haye was born on Friday 26 November 1913.

Lorna de la Haye, who is married to Alice’s grandson, took to Facebook on Friday to ask islanders to send ‘Nana’ a birthday card at Maison St. Brelade where she currently lives.

“This amazing lady will be 108 on Friday,” she wrote. “I think it would be truly amazing if anyone who has time could send her a birthday card. I know it would make her day.” 

Several islanders shared and responded to Lorna’s post promising to send cards and flowers., 

“I think Nana will be blown away as I can’t believe how many people have responded to my Facebook post!” Lorna said.

Questioned about Alice’s secret longevity, Lorna said: “Her secret to living a long happy life is a garlic tablet every day and a tipple on a Monday since she has been at Maison St. Brelade. 

“Never stay in bed when you can be up and out doing things.”
