£240k cannabis seized from ferry passenger's car

Tuesday 07 May 2019

Cannabis packages worth £240,000 have been seized from the car of a ferry passenger in Customs' second large-scale haul in just one week.

Customs and Immigration officers stopped a vehicle with a UK registration plate, which had been travelling from Poole to Jersey on the Condor Liberation, on Sunday.

When they looked inside the vehicle, they found a number of concealed packages.

Upon further inspection, it emerged that the packages contained cannabis with an estimated street value of nearly a quarter-of-a-million pounds.

The UK-born driver of the car, who has not yet been named, was due to be charged in the Magistrate's Court today for importing drugs into Jersey.

The seizure is the second high-value haul for Customs officers in the past week.

On Wednesday 1 May, 8.5kg of herbal cannabis totalling £210,000 in street value was found in the suitcase of a Spanish man who arrived from St. Malo.

Granada-born Diego Duenas Rodrigues (59) was subsequently charged in the Magistrate's Court for the importation of drugs.

But Sunday's cannabis haul wasn't the only action the Customs and Immigration team were involved in over the bank holiday weekend.

In an unrelated incident, two Russian nationals arrived on a yacht from France and were refused permission to enter because they did not have a visa.

They returned to France on their boat that day.
