Lions get muddy for charity

Saturday 07 September 2019

Islanders who don’t mind getting their hands dirty are being asked to embrace a muddy new challenge to help provide holidays for war veterans and support teens struggling with addiction.

The Lions Club of Jersey has devised a completely new fundraiser which has already “captured the imagination” of more than 200 entrants who want to get muddy for charity.

The Lions Muddy Fun Run will see participants take on three and five kilometre obstacle courses for charity causes.

This year, the challenge is in aid of Holidays for Heroes – which provides free holidays in Jersey for army members and veterans – as well as supporting a rehabilitation unit for teenagers struggling with addiction at Silkworth Lodge.

Taking place next weekend on farmers’ fields near La Hougue Bie will have different courses for adult and children and islanders are being reminded that there’s still time to sign up for the challenge.

Of the fun run, Chairman of the Lions fundraising team Ian Barrette said: “This is an entirely new event for the Lions Club involving several months of planning but we have received the full support of the landowners and the parochial authorities of St. Saviour and Grouville who will be closing two parish roads during the event itself.

“What’s more this new event will be raising funds for two well-loved local charities coincides and hopefully this will encourage many of the teams – family, schools and corporate – who already support the Swimarathon, to participate in this event too. We are also very grateful to the local organisations who have sponsored the 12 obstacles around the course.”

The event will start at 10:00 and finish at 15:30 on Saturday 14 September and individual registration can be made online here.

Competitors will race at different time slots throughout the day and entry is free for those who just want to watch the races.
