Two law enforcement officers in the frontline in the fight against fraud have opened up about their constant uphill struggle against scammers, the emotional tactics they use, and how fraud is seemingly lurking around every corner.
Fraud is a constant headache for the Jersey Police.
Recently, a spate of property scams saw £22,000 stolen from islanders, with one family left homeless after being conned by a fake Facebook property advert.
Just the other week, the States of Jersey Police announced that Islanders lost £600,000 pounds to a series of crypto-currency scams, with one family losing £200,000 - their entire life savings.
In this episode of the Bailiwick Podcast, Charlie Flynn is joined by Investigating Officer Faith Shalamon, a Financial Investigator with the Joint Financial Crimes Unit, and Chief Inspector Chris Beechey, the Chair of the Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum.
They discuss the murky world of scammers, the impact they can have on everyday people, and just how challenging it can be to police this ever-evolving, truly global kind of crime.
