Local dancers appeal for world competition sponsors

Thursday 12 May 2022

Four young dance pupils are seeking sponsorship to compete on the world stage later this year after they qualified for places in an international dance competition.

Sienna Lloyd (10), Bella Delph Reid (13), Macy Parkinson (10) and Indie Delph Reid (10) all gained places for the Dance World Cup Finals after competing in the qualifying rounds held at Haute Vallee school last month.

The four pupils from Essential Dance school will be travelling to San Sebastien, Spain in June but are hoping to find sponsorship for the competition to help cover the cost of flights, accommodation and entry fees into the arena.

All dancers gained places for solo performances in street dance and acrobatic dance (acro), in addition to qualifying in group classes.

“Unfortunately, due to lack of sponsorship and financial pressures, the majority of the teams were unable to commit, sadly leaving the decision to go out of our hands,” explained Macy’s mother, Michaela Parkinson.

“We would still love to get our girls there to perform their solo dances and will continue to encourage and support them to believe and celebrate themselves through the expression of dance.”

The pupils have been attending ‘intense’ classes four times a week as part of the Essential Dance Academy to prepare for the competition.

Dance teacher Laura Lloyd, and mother to Sienna, said the dance school’s ethos sees them use dance training to develop various skills, including leadership, teamwork, and building confidence.

“The Essential Dance Academy is an extension of the Essential Dance Family. Academy students demonstrate a passion for dance and have expressed a desire to train in addition to their weekly lessons.

“Many of the academy aspire to dance professionally in the future,” she said.

Ms Parkinson added: “We are incredibly proud of them, and it is wonderful to witness them doing what they love in a non-judgmental, supportive and fun environment.

“It will be an amazing opportunity for the girls to do what they love in front of the world, while representing their dance school and our little island Jersey.”

The Dance World Cup Finals run from 24 June to 2 July.
