A local team of pup trainers has put their best paw forward to beat off the competition at the 'Oscars for dogs'.

The Jersey Dog Handlers Association took home the award for 'Training Class of the Year' at the National Pawscars this week.

President Christine Barrett described the team as being on "cloud nine" following the result, which still "really hasn't sunk in!"

Founded in 1981, the Jersey Dog Handlers' Association has trained a number of handlers who have gone onto great success in the UK and Europe over the years.

The Association meets every Tuesday evening at the Royal Showground in Trinity and has over 100 members. They provide classes in obedience, breed showing, flyball, rally, scentwork and the Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Dog Scheme.

The club also holds a companion dog show each year and training weekends with visiting trainers.

They were one of three in the UK to be nominated for the ‘Training Class of the Year’ in the Pawscars awards – the canine equivalent of the Oscars. The winners were announced on Wednesday at the Metropole Hotel at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre on the eve of the Crufts dog show.

Christine Marett continued: "It was a star studded night of Who’s Who in the Dog world and we were thrilled to win the most votes.

"I would like to thank everyone who voted for us."
