Lockdown entrepreneur extends Jersey success to Guernsey

Saturday 28 October 2023

An entrepreneur who launched her candle business in Jersey during lockdown has branched out to Guernsey, where her family is from.

Claire Bethell is the owner of ‘Pretty Okay Candle Co’ named after her first batch of homemade candles which were "pretty okay".

Claire was furloughed during lockdown and used the free time to experiment with candles.

This led to home deliveries, pop up shops, and finally a shop of her own in St Helier.

Pretty Okay Candle has now opened on Guernsey's High Street and Claire described it as “theatrical retail” when she spoke to Express.

“You can can come and do something, as well as shop,” she explained.

The shop is stocked with eco-conscious homemade candles, while customers can also enjoy the ‘candle bar’ where they can have a drink while learning how to make their own candles.

Claire found success in Jersey and thought the “obvious next step” was Guernsey.

“I have family here and my sister is going to run the shop for me,” explained Claire.
