Look out for slow moving floats!

Thursday 10 August 2017

Today'’s Battle day and motorists are once again being reminded it could take longer to get into town than normal.

Slow moving floats heading towards the Victoria Avenue arena early this morning could see hold ups on some of the main roads leading into St Helier.

Particular pinch points could be Beaumont, the Inner Road, Queen’s Road, and Gloucester Street.

Gates for today'’s show open at 13:00, and the cavalcade starts at 14:30. Half of the floats start at the eastern end of the avenue, with the other half heading in the opposite direction. All the floats eventually complete a full circuit of the arena. Victoria Avenue will be closed to traffic for the duration of the Battle.

Around thirty floats are competing for six major prizes, with the most sought after being the Prix d'Honneur. The Optomists are hoping to take the trophy for a sixth consecutive time. This year’s float – Bossa Nova - has a Mexican theme with revolving sombreros, maracas, guitars, and trumpets. It’s been designed by Steve Bouchard.

The Avenue will also be closed on Friday evening for the Moonlight Parade. Gates open at 19:30, the show gets underway at 21:00, and there’s a fireworks finale at 22:30.
