Police are warning islanders not to give money to an Instagram profile purporting to be Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham.
This morning officers urged islanders to ignore any requests for donations.
In a post shared to their Facebook page late on Sunday evening, they said: "SoJP would like to warn the public that a fake Instagram account has been established in the name of Senator Lyndon Farnham.
"This account is inviting donations from members of the public. Please do not respond to this fraudulent request and certainly do not send funds towards this invitation."
The post has been shared 160 times, with one Facebook user jokingly commenting: "Well that’s 50p I’ll never see again !!!!!"
The account has been reported and it is believed that it has since been taken down.
Senator Lyndon Farnham thanked the police for their assistance and reiterated their warning.
"Sadly this is not uncommon practice on social media and I would urge islanders to continue to be vigilant especially if receiving uninvited or unusual requests."
