"Magnificent spectacle" of over 100 boats to mark 200 years of the RNLI

Wednesday 14 August 2024

A grand flotilla will be passing through St Aubin's Bay on Monday in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the RNLI.

The flotilla, which will consist of over 100 boats, will parade down the length of the bay close to the shoreline.

It will be starting at 18:30 from St Aubin's Fort via West Park before finishing in St Helier Harbour.

The flotilla will be led by the RNLI's all weather lifeboat and will be followed by a diverse range of boats. Alongside individual participants, various clubs and community organisations will be taking part, including St Helier Yacht Club, the Jersey Rowing Club and members of Jersey's fishing community, as well as Ports of Jersey and the emergency services.

"The event has been organised by the St. Helier Yacht Club and is set to be 'a magnificent spectacle' of the boats parading down the bay. It is hosted to specifically recognise the 'outstanding volunteer service' provided by the crews and adjacent support staff in Jersey," the RNLI said.

Jeff Speller, Commodore of the St. Helier Yacht Club, said the event would be a "perfect opportunity for members of the public in addition to participating boat owners and the maritime community at large to recognise the excellent voluntary service provided by the RNLI both in Jersey and throughout the British Isles".

"The club has been delighted to take the lead in organising this event which we hope will help raise the profile of the organisation on the occasion of its 200 year anniversary and lead to continued support including for future fund raising activities," he added.
