Fog hits postal services

It's not just Islanders who have struggled to get to and from Jersey over the last few days - the persistent February fog has also hit our postal services, with Jersey Post currently dealing with a backlog of both inbound and outbound mail.

Incoming mail from the UK has been disrupted due to the aircraft bringing mail to Jersey being cancelled on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

The second class mail from Friday arrived by boat on Monday; however Royal Mail advised that Special Delivery items had remained in the UK.

As Monday’s plane was also cancelled, Royal Mail arranged for Special Delivery items from Friday and all items from Monday’s cancelled flight to be delivered by ferry last night and then distributed in the delivery rounds today.

Parcels from FedEx have also been delayed due to weather conditions. However, the delivery due last Friday is expected to arrive, be processed and be out for delivery today.

All mail being sent from Jersey on Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Monday 20 February left the Island by ferry on Monday evening as outbound flights from Jersey were also affected by the fog.

The mail plane managed to land in Jersey at 06:18 yesterday, before the weather once again closed in. The majority of Tuesdays’ items, including all Special Delivery items, were processed and delivered to Islanders yesterday.

Kenan Osborne, Interim Operations Director said: “We are continuing to clear the backlog caused by the adverse weather since Friday. Our postal workers are hard at work processing mail and we aim to be back on schedule by the end of this week. We are working with our customers to keep them informed and up to date as local conditions improve. We thank our customers for their understanding and support.”
