Wednesday 03 July 2024

A 34-year-old man appeared in court today charged with three counts of manslaughter relating to the deaths of the crew aboard the L'Ecume II fishing trawler.

Artur Sevash-Zade from Ukraine was remanded in custody following the hearing in the Magistrate's Court this morning.

On 8 December 2022, the L'Ecume II fishing vessel sank following a collision with Condor’s Commodore Goodwill freight ship.

The incident resulted in the deaths of the trawler's skipper, Michael Michieli, as well as crewmen Jervis Ramirez Baligat and Larry Simyunn.

Sevash-Zade was arrested in the UK as part of Operation Nectar, the criminal investigation into the collision.

The operation was carried out by States of Jersey Police officers supported by UK forces, and conducted in liaison with the Law Officers Department.

Sevash-Zade was then brought to Jersey.

He was charged today with the unlawful killing of Mr Michieli, Mr Baligat and Mr Simyunn within the territorial waters of Jersey.

Police said their thoughts remain with the families of the men who died.
