Man pleads guilty to glassing assault

A 39-year-old man has pleaded guilty to grave and criminal assault after he hit one of his friends in the face with a glass bottle, which smashed on impact.

John Lannigan, from Glasgow, will be sentenced on 17 August in Royal Court.

The incident took place on 1 May at Mr Lannigan's home in St. John. He had invited the victim, one of his friends, along with others for an Easter party. 

Mr Lannigan hit the victim on the face, which smashed on impact. 32 sutures were required to close the wound.

Mr Lannigan's advocate, Lorraine McClure, said he had drank alcohol over the course of evening and admitted he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. 

She urged the court to allow Mr Lannigan to remain on bail until his sentencing, explaining that he had been fully compliant with the conditions so far. She also explained his wife relied on him for the care of their children.

She said he was aware of what he had done and wanted to understand what caused him to do it. She described the incident as an outburst and said Mr Lannigan was of good character.

The Deputy Bailiff, sitting with Jurats Elizabeth Dulake and Geoffrey Grime, however refused to grant bail describing the incident as "a serious offence for a drunken glassing." Mr Lannigan was remanded in custody until 17 August.
