Masks still needed at airport and harbour

Monday 31 January 2022

People passing through the airport or harbour will still be requested to wear face masks after the legal requirement falls away.

From tomorrow (Tuesday 1 February), individuals will no longer be legally obliged to wear face masks in public settings and businesses will no longer be required to collect contact tracing details from customers.

It’s the first step in Ministers’ ‘De-escalation Plan’, which will see all covid restrictions gradually phased out by 31 March.

However, Liberty Bus confirmed to Express last week that, while masks will no longer be required in the bus station from tomorrow, wearing one will still be a condition of travel.

Kevin Hart, Director for LibertyBus, said this afternoon that the decision was taken because “buses are enclosed spaces” and the company wished to protect “customers, staff and the wider public.”

“This, of course, will be reviewed in the near future,” he added.

Anyone who forgets a mask will still be able to purchase one in Liberation Station or on the bus.

Ports of Jersey has now confirmed that it will also be asking travellers to continue wearing masks.

Maria Le Tiec, Head of Security and Passenger Services for Ports of Jersey, said: “Ports of Jersey welcomes last week’s announcement that travel restrictions are to be lifted as from Monday 7 February 2022.

“We would like to confirm that at this stage, passengers and customers are still requested to wear masks/shields (unless an exemption is in place) when using our terminals at both the airport and harbour and to maintain social distancing wherever possible.

All public facing staff, including check-in agents and security personnel will continue to wear face masks.

We look forward to welcoming passengers as we grow connectivity in the weeks and months ahead.”
