Meet Jersey’s new Children’s Commissioner

Children, young people, parents and carers in Jersey are invited to meet the new Children’s Commissioner today as part of a drop-in event between 12:00 and 15:00 at The Link, located inside Eagle House at La Colomberie.

No booking is required for the event and children and young people can just turn up on the day to speak directly to Deborah McMillan about any issues they may face.

Mrs McMillan started her new role as the first Children’s Commissioner for Jersey on 8 January. A former director of children’s services in the UK, police officer and teacher, she was appointed following a recruitment process which involved being interviewed by a panel of young people.

The drop-in session forms part of an Island wide consultation to ask children and young people for their views on what should be her areas of focus. It is aimed to give children, young people, parents and carers the opportunity to come and speak to Mrs McMillan about areas they think she should be prioritising.

In addition to this drop in event, online surveys, designed for children from three to eighteen years old, are available until 16 March. More than 1,000 online surveys have already been completed since the launch on 19 February.

Once the information from the online surveys and group discussions has been gathered, Ms McMillan will publish her strategic plan for the next three years.

She said: “I want to speak to as many children and young people as possible. This event is an opportunity for people to speak to me about issues they’re
concerned about in a relaxed environment. I will be running these events on a regular basis and hope children and young people will take the opportunity to come
and tell me what I can do to improve things for them in Jersey.”
