Shortly after 11:15, they announced that they were no longer searching for an islander reported missing.
In a post on social media, a spokesperson said: “We would like to thank the public for their assistance in relation to the earlier missing person, we are no longer searching for the male or his vehicle.”
In the subsequent hours, a number of the missing man’s family and friends added a banner to their Facebook profile pictures indicating that they were in mourning.
Police are still yet to formally confirm the identity of the body, and said that no further comment would be issued on the matter until identification is complete.
They added that a file is being prepared for the Deputy Viscount.
