Covid cases continue to rise in care homes

There are now 31 cases of covid in care homes - a rise of 11 in a day.

The latest stats come after local care homes were shut to visitors ahead of a vaccine programme for their residents.

Due to a sharp rise in cases on Friday, the programme was brought forward by a day and the first jabs were given on Sunday.

Great-grandmother Beryl Taylor (87) was among the first few to receive her injection, and encouraged all islanders to take up the opportunity to get vaccinated.

The care home residents that have been vaccinated will receive a second dose 21 days after receiving their first. If the programme is successful, they should therefore have immunity from the virus by the New Year.

Overall, there are 774 people currently recorded as having covid in the community, with 492 of those individuals showing symptoms.

There are 24 people in hospital with the illness, a fall of one from the previous day.

The majority of new cases (28) were picked up via the contact tracing process, while 16 were found during workforce screening and 11 via cohort screening.
