More Russian figures on “asset freeze” list

Wednesday 26 March 2014

As the crisis in Ukraine and the Crimea continues, the West has extended sanctions against key figures prompting Jersey’s Chief Minister to request banks and financial institutions to freeze assets of a new group of individuals including politicians, military officers, and the head of a news organisation.

Jersey has now given effect to sanctions against 33 people who the EU say have been responsible for actions that “undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine”.

A statement from the Chief Minister’s department said that banks and financial institutions should check the latest list at www.gov.uk/government/publications/financial-sanctions-ukraine-sovereignty-and-territorial-integrity to see if any of their clients might be affected.

The statement said: “All Jersey financial institutions are requested to check whether they hold any accounts, funds or economic resources for the persons listed and, if they do, to freeze such accounts, funds or economic resources and report the facts to the Chief Minister’s department.”

The diplomatic pressure from the West has stepped up since Vladimir Putin moved to seize Crimea and built-up Russian troops along the border with Ukraine. Ukrainian forces in Crimea have all now surrendered, joined the Russians or been ejected from military bases.

Russia has now been sidelined by the G8 group of major nations, who have criticised Russia’s “illegal attempt to annex Crimea” and warned that severe consequences could be faced unless Moscow changes course.
