Motorist said she was speeding "to sort head out"

Thursday 06 July 2023

A 27-year-old woman caught speeding three times within the last year told the Magistrate's Court she did so "to sort her head out" – but has now taken up boxing instead.

Charlotte Myles admitted the latest offence, on the night of 21 March, when she appeared in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. She was fined £350 and banned from the roads for two months.

She was spotted by police carrying out speed checks driving at 62mph along Victoria Avenue – an area with a 40mph speed limit.

St. Helier Centenier Danny Scaife, prosecuting, told the court that Myles also had speeding convictions from 28 June last year and 14 March this year. In both of these, she drove on roads with 30mph limits at over 40mph.

Myles admitted the latest offence and said: "I messed up. I used speed to sort my head out, to clear my head.

"Now I’ve found different methods. I do boxing."

Magistrate Bridget Shaw accepted that Myles relied on her car so imposed a short driving ban and did not order her to retake the test afterwards.

But she said: "Doing 22mph above the limit is a gross speed. You really do not have a good record. You have to be safe on the roads."

She allowed her to pay the fine at the rate of £25 per week.
